Good welding is not simply the act of joining two pieces of metal. Aluminium requires more careful handling in welding than most metals. Its low melting point combined with high thermal conductivity, a surface oxide layer that reforms within seconds of cleaning, and its sensitivity to porosity and distortion all mean that parameters need to be controlled closely throughout. A weld that looks acceptable on the surface can still be structurally unreliable if the preparation or setup was not right.
